Top 10 Leadership Skills Every Teen Should Develop

Developing leadership skills is crucial for teens as they navigate their high school years and prepare for future challenges. The research is clear, the need to develop leadership skills is desired by students and the world needs those skills now. From governments to employers, youth leadership development is a growing topic of discussion. How do you develop these skills? Through exposure to high- quality leadership workshop that use real-world scenarios.  

First, let’s focus on the skills in demand. Through analysis of the University of Minnesota youth leadership research (Link) and the work of the United Nations Future Ready Skills Initiative (Link), we have compiled a list of skills to develop. 

1. Communication

Effective communication is the cornerstone of leadership. It involves expressing ideas clearly, listening actively, and engaging in meaningful dialogue. Joining the debate team helps teens learn how to express their ideas clearly and persuasively, preparing them for leadership roles that require strong communication skills (1).


2. Teamwork

Teamwork is essential for achieving common goals and building strong relationships. Working effectively in a team requires collaboration, compromise, and the ability to leverage each member's strengths. Participating in group projects or sports teams teaches teens how to collaborate effectively with others, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose (2).


3. Problem-Solving

Leaders often face complex challenges that require creative and strategic solutions. Problem-solving skills enable teens to approach issues methodically and find effective solutions. Engaging in science fairs or math competitions encourages teens to think critically and find solutions to complex problems, honing their problem-solving abilities (3).


4. Time Management

 Managing time effectively is crucial for balancing multiple responsibilities and meeting deadlines. Time management skills help teens prioritize tasks and stay organized. Balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and a part-time job helps teens learn to prioritize tasks and manage their time efficiently, preparing them for future leadership roles (4).


5. Empathy

Empathy allows leaders to understand and relate to the feelings and perspectives of others. It fosters trust, compassion, and effective communication. Volunteering at a local shelter or mentoring younger students helps teens develop the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, making them more empathetic leaders (5). 


6. Adaptability

The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is a key trait of effective leaders. Adaptability enables teens to remain flexible and resilient in the face of challenges. Participating in exchange programs or trying out new activities helps teens learn to adjust to different environments and situations, enhancing their adaptability (6).


7. Confidence

Explanation: Confidence is essential for making decisions, taking risks, and inspiring others. Confident leaders believe in their abilities and can motivate their teams. Taking on leadership roles in student organizations or clubs helps teens build self-assurance and believe in their abilities, preparing them to lead with confidence (7)


8. Responsibility

Responsibility involves being accountable for one's actions and decisions. Responsible leaders can be trusted to follow through on commitments and uphold their duties. Taking care of a pet or managing a small business project teaches teens the importance of being accountable for their actions, fostering a sense of responsibility (8) (9).


9. Creativity

Creativity is the ability to think outside the box and generate innovative ideas. Creative leaders can find unique solutions to problems and inspire others with their vision. Joining an art club or participating in creative writing workshops encourages teens to think outside the box and come up with innovative ideas, enhancing their creativity (10).


10. Resilience

Resilience is the capacity to recover from setbacks and stay motivated in the face of adversity. Resilient leaders can navigate challenges and maintain a positive outlook. Overcoming challenges in sports or academics helps teens develop the ability to bounce back from setbacks and stay motivated, building their resilience (11).

By developing these leadership skills, teens can become well-rounded individuals who are prepared to take on leadership roles in their future careers and communities. Encouraging teens to engage in activities that foster these skills can have a lasting positive impact on their personal and professional growth.
